Hello everyone,
This is Kimono Rental Hibiki in Dazaifu, Fukuoka 👘
When people think of one of Dazaifu’s most famous sightseeing spots,
it is of course Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ⛩️
Did you know that the scenery you can see at Dazaifu Tenmangu right now
is something truly special that can only be experienced for a limited time?
At the moment, the main shrine building is undergoing the Reiwa Grand Renovation,
so worship is currently taking place at the temporary shrine (Kariden).
According to the official information, visits to the Kariden are expected to continue until early May 2026,
which means this is a rare chance to experience a very special style of worship that can only be seen now.
Today, we would like to introduce the charm of Dazaifu Tenmangu—
a place that is especially worth visiting right now ✨
What kind of place is Dazaifu Tenmangu?

Dazaifu Tenmangu is the shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane,
who is widely known as the god of learning and scholarship.
The shrine was originally built over the grave site of Michizane,
and over the centuries it has become a deeply revered place of worship.
Today, it is known as the head shrine of Tenmangu shrines throughout Japan,
and many visitors come here to pray for academic success and protection from misfortune.
For people born and raised in Fukuoka,
it is almost a tradition to visit this shrine before important entrance exams during their student years.
It is a place loved by local people,
an essential sightseeing spot in Dazaifu,
and a truly special site that has been carefully passed down for over a thousand years.
The special charm of the Kariden, which can only be seen now
Because Dazaifu Tenmangu’s main shrine is currently undergoing major renovation work,
the sacred spirit of Sugawara no Michizane has been temporarily moved to the Kariden,
creating a special and unusual style of worship that is different from normal times.

In 2027,
it will mark 1,125 years since the passing of Michizane.
At Dazaifu Tenmangu,
the Shikinen Taisai is held every 25 years,
in connection with the number 25, which has a deep relationship with Sugawara no Michizane.
Through this recurring festival, the shrine has continued to renew devotion to Tenjin worship and honor his sacred spirit.
As one of the commemorative projects leading up to 2027,
the large-scale renovation of the main shrine began in May 2023 and is expected to take about three years.
It is said to be the first major renovation of this scale in 124 years.
According to the official guidance from Dazaifu Tenmangu,
after the main shrine is completed and the sacred spirit is returned there during the Shosenza-sai ceremony,
the Kariden is expected to complete its role.

A Kariden that is also attracting attention as architecture
Another major attraction of the Kariden is its striking design by architect Sou Fujimoto,
especially the trees growing across the roof.
Within the historic grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu,
it has drawn attention as a unique structure that can only be seen during this limited period.
It is said that the design was inspired by
the large roof of the main shrine and the rich greenery of the sacred forest surrounding Dazaifu Tenmangu.
In addition, as part of a dedication project related to the Shikinen Taisai,
a special music dedication performance by Ichiro Yamaguchi was held at the Kariden on March 15, 2026,
and related video footage has also been released.
Events like this help show that
the current Kariden exists within a very special moment in time.
Enjoy this limited-time scenery in kimono
This season, when you can enjoy a different atmosphere from the usual Dazaifu Tenmangu,
is perfect not only for worship but also for taking memorable photos.

If you are someone who feels,
“I have not seen the Kariden yet,”
or
“I want to keep a memory of this special view,”
then we highly recommend visiting sooner rather than later.
And if you are going to enjoy this limited-time scenery,
why not visit in kimono as well?
The historic streets of Dazaifu pair beautifully with kimono,
and kimono also looks wonderful against the unique and special atmosphere of the Kariden 📸
As a memory of your visit to Dazaifu,
and as a way to preserve the scenery of Dazaifu Tenmangu that can only be seen now,
we hope you will enjoy a special outing in kimono.
