【Comparison】Does a Kimono’s Impression Change with the Obi? Types of Obi and Styling Differences

Hello everyone,
This is Kimono Rental Hibiki in Dazaifu, Fukuoka.

Did you know that wearing a kimono involves many different elements?

From inner garments and nagajuban to the kimono itself, obi belt, obijime, and obiage, multiple layers come together to complete the final look.

While many people focus on the kimono’s color or pattern,
the element that significantly changes the overall impression is actually the obi.

Today, we’ll introduce different types of obi and how they affect styling.

Han-haba Obi

A narrow obi about half the width of formal obi such as fukuro obi.

Suitable for yukata and casual kimono,
it creates a light and playful back style with ribbon or creative knots.

This is included in our standard rental.

✔ First-time kimono experience
✔ Casual stroll in Dazaifu
✔ Light and easy styling

Recommended for beginners.

Heko Obi

A soft and wide obi with volume.

Recently popular among adult women, it is comfortable and allows fluffy ribbon styles.

✔ Cute and trendy look
✔ SNS photo-focused styling
✔ Perfect with lace kimono

Available for +1,100 yen.
Many guests also choose it with our unlimited accessory option (+1,500 yen).

Compared to han-haba obi, it gives a more modern and playful impression.
Adding lace decorations, like in the photo, enhances volume and cuteness.

Fukuro Obi

A formal and elegant obi that became popular after the Meiji period.

Luxurious and refined, it creates a graceful and sophisticated back view.

✔ Family photo sessions
✔ Shichi-Go-San or special occasions
✔ Elegant and mature styling

Available for +1,000 yen.

Simply changing from han-haba obi to fukuro obi dramatically elevates the overall look.

Changing the Obi Changes Everything.

The obi is truly a key piece in kimono styling.

✔ Casual → Han-haba obi
✔ Cute and voluminous → Heko obi
✔ Elegant and formal → Fukuro obi

Choosing based on your desired mood or photo scene makes your kimono stroll in Dazaifu even more special.

Heko and fukuro obi can be changed on the day of your visit.
