The enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane, is well known for his deep love of plum blossoms.

According to legend, when Michizane was exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu,
a beloved plum tree flew overnight from Kyoto to be reunited with him.
This famous story is known as the “Flying Plum Tree” legend.

The sacred plum tree, still carefully preserved today, is an early-blooming variety called “Iro-Tamagaki.”
Within the shrine grounds, there are approximately 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees in total, displaying a wide range of colors and shapes.

It is said that all these plum trees were planted as offerings,
symbolizing protection from misfortune and the welcoming of good fortune. They continue to be cherished by many visitors.

Umegae Mochi and Michizane

Dazaifu’s famous sweet, Umegae Mochi, is also connected to Michizane.

It is said that during his difficult life in exile,
a local elderly woman (Jomyoni) took pity on him and offered him rice cakes attached to a plum branch.
This story is believed to be the origin of Umegae Mochi.

In Dazaifu, plum blossoms are not simply flowers—
they are deeply connected to history, faith, and tradition.

Enjoy Spring in Dazaifu with Plum Blossoms and Kimono

While cherry blossoms are often associated with spring in Japan,
in Dazaifu you can enjoy beautiful plum blossoms even earlier in the season.

White, pale pink, and deep red plum blossoms create a stunning contrast with kimono,
making them perfect for photos.

Soft pastel spring tones,
as well as wine-colored or muted lace kimono, pair especially beautifully with plum blossoms.

Since the full-bloom period is relatively short,
we encourage you to take this opportunity to stroll through Dazaifu in kimono and enjoy the blossoms.

You can find many plum trees behind the main shrine building.

If you are considering kimono rental in Dazaifu,
we warmly invite you to visit Kimono Rental Hibiki.

We look forward to welcoming you.
